Project Overview

The practice has been widely involved in the sites within the Slate Landscapes World Heritage Site.  Maenofferen is considered one of the most important remaining built complexes, a vast set of buildings (II* and scheduled) including a slate dressing mill, workshops, inclines and winding houses.  The team (alongside TRPCE) have designed an extensive proposal for the Slate dressing mill, winding houses and associated buildings, to create a mountain resort.  The initial concept works were made possible by AHF support. The practice has now helped secure a Cadw grant to undertake urgent works to the mill whilst the scheme is developed towards and NLHF application.  These works have been carefully detailed to minimise water ingress but protect the remaining machinery, details and the huge trusses constructed of Canadian pitch-pine, which returned on ships delivering slate to North America.
